The DMHSA Prevention & Training Branch held a 4-day Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training (SAPST) from November 13-16 at the Guam Royal Orchid. Over 25 community representatives were trainined on the basic fundamentals of prevention programming and planning. |

Building Capacity Among Guam's Community : The APPEAL Training was held at the Fiesta Resort Guam on October 29-31, 2007. The 3-day training brought together Guam's Community Organizations to address community readiness, leadership, and team-building. The training was conducted by Executive Director Rod Lew of the Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment Advocacy and Leadership (APPEAL) from Oakland, California. |

Red Ribbon Week Activities: PEACE participated in this year's 2007 Red Ribbon Activities held throughout the month of October 2007. |

Building Capacity Among Youth & Staff: In preparation for the Summer 2007 Youth Swimming and Water Safety Program, the PEACE staff and 20 youth facilitators participated in the American Red Cross CPR First Aid Course, which was administered by Firefighter Edward Duenas. A refresher course was held on June 7, 2007 and the actual course was held on June 8-9, 2007. |

Over 200 youth registered for the Summer 2007 Youth Swimming and Water Safety Program. The program includes the following activities: swimming lessons, water safety instruction, drug prevention awareness presentations, self-esteem and teambuilding workshops, conflict resolution and peer mediation, health, arts & crafts, interactive games and rock wall climbing. The swim program is sponsored by the Youth For Youth Organization and supported by the Guam Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse, PEACE-Prevention & Training Branch. |

American Legacy Foundation: The American Legacy Foundation held a 3-day planning meeting with representatives from all the Micronesia Islands, including American Samoa. The meeting was held on May 21-23, 2007 at the Westing Resort & Spa. The purpose of this meeting was to prepare for the April 2008 Tobacco in the Pacific Island Conference. American Legacy Foundation is one of the nation's top advocacy groups against tobacco. Their motto is"Building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit." |
SAPST Training of the Trainers (TOT): The Prevention & Training Branch/PEACE staff completed 32 contact hours of the National Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training (SAPST) Training of the Trainers (TOT) which was offered by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The training was held from May 7-11, 2007. The new cadre of local SAPST trainers will begin training community members on how to apply certain strategies and methods when developing substance abuse prevention programs within their communities. |

Guam participated in National Kick Butts Day. Representatives from PEACE, Youth for Youth LIVE, Guam and the American Cancer Society held a community outreach at the Chamorro Village Night Market on March 28, 2007. |

PEACE participated in presentations and an exhibit at the 2007 Educators' Academy at the George Washington High School on 03/02/07. |

CADCA 2007 National Leadership Forum XVII. PEACE staff and a Youth For Youth LIVE, Guam Organization (YFYLG) member represented Guam at the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) 2007 National Leadership Forum XVII, held at the Washington D.C. Convention Center on February 12-15, 2007. The leadership conference is one of the largest conferences bringing together over 5,000 coalition members nationwide to partner, organize; develop plans and programs to coordinate anti-drug efforts. |

The Center of Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) team conducted a complete prevention systems review on Guam from January 9th – 12th, 2007. The review provided recommendations of opportunities for Technical Assistance and program enhancements in regards to prevention and SYNAR compliance. The CSAP team included Allen W. Ward, Barbara Fuller and Sandra Hoover. |

PEACE Provides Training and Technical Assistance with the Village Mayors' Offices From November 27th to December 1st, 2006, PEACE held PC training with select mayors' staff to assist communities with collecting data withing their villages. After completion of the training, mayors' staff was each provided a new desktop computer outfitted with Microsoft Office 2003. |

Capacity Building Within The Villages PEACE met with the various village mayors of Guam on 11/15/06 to formalize the agreement of an automotive office data collection process. Village mayors will be provided hardware/software equipment and programming training by PEACE so that Mayors can collect demographic data through a standardize Village Residence Data Collection system. In return, village mayors agree to provide PEACE with current demographic data collected and assist with the updating of the village profiles. |
