Drugs & Youth

The top 3 substances of abuse on Guam, as reported by Middle and High School students are:

  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Marijuana
Guam currently has the highest adult smoking prevalence among all US states and territories. Youth smoking rates parallel the high adult rates.
1 out of 6 middle school students and 1 out of 3 high school students are current smokers.

The percentage of Guam high school students who are current smokers appears to be decreasing, although rates are still 30% higher than US mainland youth.

Year 1999 2001 2003 2005
US (%) 34.8 28.5 21.9 23.0
Guam (%) 37.3 37.1 31.6 30.8
About 4 out of every 10 high school students are current alcohol drinkers.

The major factors that are most important in preventing young people from abusing tobacco, alcohol and other drugs include:

  • Having healthy alternatives such as sports and clubs
  • Having peers who are alcohol, tobacco and drug-free
  • Having a good relationship with one's parents
  • Having a positive self-image

17% of middle school students reported having their first alcoholic drink before the age of 11.

19% of Guam's adults are binge drinkers, having four or more drinks on one occassion.
Alcohol use and abuse is a significant factor in traffic accidents, fatalities, family violence, suicides, and homicides on the island.
Marijuana is the third most commonly tried substance being abused by our youth after tobacco and alcohol. About 1 in 3 high school youth have reported trying marijuana as early as 13 years old.
Among court-involved youth, marijuana and inhalants were reported as the illicit drugs most frequently used.
